Ulli Knall

Life

Ulli Knall was born in Munich in 1970 and grew up in Vorarlberg, Austria, from the age of two. She moved to Vienna at seventeen to study ceramic product design at the University of Applied Arts. During this time she was also a  guest-student, at the sculpture department, at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and at the sculpture department at the University Of Applied Arts Vienna with Prof. Bertoni. In 1996, after finishing her studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, she went to London to study a Master In Fine Art at Goldsmiths University Of London, UK. She stayed in London for the following 20 years, working as an artist, portrait artist and architectural and interior photographer. In 2016 she moved back to Austria where she now lives.

Work

Ulli Knall has her own peculiar vision of the world. She likes to play with ideas from popular culture, alternate history, science fiction and art history. Themes reappear in her oeuvre like a nonlinear storyline in a Tarantino movie. Her art exudes a strange innocence and element of childlike wonder that can easily flip into dark and nightmarish scenarios.
